How to Choose a Crypto Exchange Without Confusing a Brand With a Venue
Spot, perps, and self-custody are different products. Pick the venue for the ticket you actually send — then confirm withdrawal on a small size.

Editorial standards. Guides are written from published catalog data and vendor documentation — not paid placement copy. Sponsored listings are labeled separately. See listing guidelines.
Crypto homepages sell “the exchange.” The ticket is usually one of three things: spot, perpetuals, or a place to park inventory. Mixing them because one brand has a bitcoin widget is how people end up with the wrong custody and the wrong liquidation engine.
Use the crypto hub and the crypto stack collection as directories. Catalog rows for Binance, Coinbase, and Bybit are starting points. Hyperliquid is a perps venue in the tool catalog — do not treat it as a spot broker profile.
1. Name the ticket
Write:
- Spot vs perps vs both
- Whether you need fiat on-ramp
- Whether you withdraw to self-custody every week
- Whether you need an API for a bot
- Whether you can live with an offshore entity
A weekly DCA and a 20x perp are different purchases.
2. Custody and withdrawal first
The brand is not the wallet.
- Deposit and withdrawal methods you will actually use
- Published withdrawal fees and any lockups
- Whether the legal entity on the application matches the one in the ad
- How they treat “maintenance” during a move
Make a small deposit, trade tiny, withdraw. Do this before the account matters. Regulation fields on a profile are only as complete as the catalog — empty means unverified, not “safe.”
3. Perps are a separate product
Funding, liquidation, and insurance funds are not spot problems. If you trade perps, read:
- How mark price is built
- Isolated vs cross
- Auto-deleveraging language
- API rate limits when the book is stressed
Compare Bybit vs Binance vs Hyperliquid only after those sentences exist. The longer compare is Bybit vs Binance vs Hyperliquid.
4. On-chain research is not execution
A terminal or screener in the crypto stack does not clear a withdrawal. Do not pick an exchange because a research tool looks good next to it.
5. Compare two venues, then test size
Put two names in broker compare if both have profiles. Read platforms and whatever structured fields exist. Your withdrawal on a quiet Tuesday is the conclusion.
Discuss the tape in Crypto Spot or Crypto Perps after you have a venue — not instead of reading the withdrawal page.
FAQ
Is a big brand safer?
It is more famous. Custody, entity, and withdrawal still have to be tested. Size is not a regulator.
Should I keep inventory on the exchange?
Only if you accept exchange risk for that inventory. The catalog does not invent a custody rating.
Where do I see crypto-capable brokers?
Brokers filtered to what you need, plus the crypto hub. Missing fields stay blank.
